New funding initiative for music and film

New funding initiative for music and film

Dunedin (Thursday, 28 April 2016) – The Dunedin City Council is launching an initiative to help promote music and film in Dunedin, working in partnership with NZ On Air.

Launched in July 2011, Making Tracks is an NZ On Air funding programme which provides grants of up to $10,000 for recording a song and making a music video for broadcast — on radio, on television

DCC Community Arts Advisor Craig Monk says the DCC's Bring It Home initiative will let artists who are awarded a Making Tracks grant secure more funding if they film their video in Dunedin, or hire people or buy goods or services here.

The DCC will offer top up funding of up to $2,000 to artists who are awarded Making Tracks music video funding from NZ On Air.

Mr Monk says, “Dunedin has an incredible musical heritage and a diverse and exciting music scene today. The DCC wants to grow Dunedin's music industry by helping more artists from Dunedin secure Making Tracks grants. We want to further develop Dunedin's film industry by enabling more music videos to be produced here in Dunedin.”

The DCC expects to make up to eight awards between now and next June.

Creative Dunedin Partnership Chair Cr Aaron Hawkins says, "Building up Dunedin's creative industries, one of the key themes of Ara Toi Ōtepoti, is critical to our transition to a smart, low carbon economy. The Bring It Home scheme also helps deliver on our goal of fostering inspired connections, between local artists here and their peers around the country."

NZ On Air Head of Music & Radio David Ridler is pleased to have Dunedin on board for the Bring It Home initiative. “Dunedin is a beautiful city with a rich and vibrant musical heritage.

It will be great to see more images of Dunedin, and know more Dunedin businesses are involved in music videos in the future.”

Artists who have received a MakingTracks grant and would like to be considered for this top-up funding in Dunedin should get in touch with the Community Arts Advisor at aratoi@dcc.govt.nz.
