King Tahwiao Powhiri & Unveiling Confirmed for Sunday 15 May

The unveiling of the King Tawhiao sign at the northern entrance to Taumarunui has been confirmed for Sunday 15 May 2016.

Ruapehu District Maori Council (RDMC) Chairperson Edwin Ashford said that this was a very exciting time for local Iwi and Te Kiingitanga and it was hoped that all of Taumarunui and others will join in with us to celebrate the unveiling.

“It is hoped that King Tuheitia is able to unveil the new sign in person however if this is not possible then representatives from his family will undertake the honours,” he said.

“The proceedings will start with a Powhiri at Ngapuwaiwaha Marae on Taumarunui St at 11.00am.”

“Following the Powhiri we will move down to the northern entrance for the unveiling where Ruapehu Mayor Don Cameron will welcome everyone.”

Mr. Ashford said that refreshments will be served at Ngapuwaiwaha Marae following the unveiling.

“We would like to stress that this event is for everyone and that all are most welcome to attend the Powhiri and the unveiling followed by the refreshments afterwards,” he said.
