Media Release

Free Theatre Christchurch presents:

Devil and the Blues Ubu Night

Come join us at the crossroads and sing the blues. As the sun goes down, and darkness takes a hold. He’s waiting for you here, the fallen prince, the great actor, at the crossroads, serving wine, food and song to ease the pain. Come on Sinnerman, you be amongst friends here, sittin round the table with the great rebel and his horde of black riders: Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, Nina Simone, The Rolling Stones, Van Morison, Diamanda Galas, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. As a lead-in to the Cavell Leitch New Zealand Jazz and Blues Festival, Free Theatre presents a special ‘Devil and the Blues Ubu Night’.

Ubu Nights are a series of entertainments (combining theatre, music, film and hospitality) that engage diverse communities in interactive and sensory experiences. Proudly supported by the Christchurch City Council, the Arts Centre of Christchurch and RDU, Free Theatre is collaborating on these Ubu Nights with Christchurch artists from different disciplines. The unique experience of contemporary performance is quite unlike anything on offer in Christchurch and is proving very popular with Neat Places describing Ubu Nights as “our new favourite thing to do on Friday nights”.
