Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass, SH73 closed at Springfield

Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass, SH73 closed at Springfield due to high winds – 4.50 pmupdate

The NZ Transport Agency has closed the state highway between Springfield and Arthur’s Pass National Park due to extremely high winds in the area this afternoon.

“We apologise to road users for this inconvenience but safety is a priority and while the winds stay extreme, this is a short term protection,” said Lee Wright, Transport Agency Journey Manager.

“We will reassess the closure later tonight so drivers should check our web map for updates.”

The alternative route is State Highway 7 via Lewis Pass which is still open but a strong wind warning is in place. Motorists are advised to take extreme care or delay their travel.

The Met Service is forecasting severe gales for much of the South Island and Greymouth had thunderstorms this afternoon.

Check this map on the Transport Agency's Traffic and Travel web pages for updates or check the table view for specific highway advice.

For further information, check the Met Service severe weather warnings and the rainradar maps for your area.
