Wellington Jobs Market Rises

Wellington Jobs Market Rises

The Wellington job market is in good shape, with a 10.1 per cent increase in job ads on SEEK from March to April; 10.9 per cent more job ads than 12 months ago.

Industries in Wellington that are helping drive this growth are Marketing and Communications, Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics and Construction, with year-on-year job ad increases on SEEK for these industries:

-Marketing and Communication jobs up 95 per cent

-Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics jobs up 66 per cent

-Construction jobs up 27 per cent

SEEK NZ General Manager Janet Faulding said from October 2014 we saw the Wellington job market really stagnate.

“The job market in our nation’s capital is now on the up, with job ads from March to April on SEEK showing growth across most industries,” Ms Faulding said.

“The fastest growing industry in Wellington has been Marketing and Communications, with a 95 per cent jump in SEEK job ads when compared to April 2015.

“Even though Marketing and Communications is a small employing industry in Wellington, it’s great to see such positive growth,” Ms Faulding added.

In Marketing and Communications the candidates most in demand are:

-Internal Communication Specialists

-Marketing and Communication Managers

-Marketing Assistants and Coordinators

When you look at what people are earning in this industry, the average Marketing and Communications salary for April across Wellington is $82,055, which is above the national April average of $78,536.

It’s also encouraging that job ads on SEEK for Construction and Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics industries are on the rise compared to 12 months ago.

“With a number of construction projects underway across the city, like the Kapiti Express Way, office revamps and seismic strengthening of buildings, it’s likely that these sorts of initiatives are helping contribute to the sustained demand for labour and year-on-year growth,” Faulding said.

The sectors with the best year-on-year results for Wellington Construction job ads on SEEK this April were:

-Plant and Machinery Operators

-Estimating (Quantity Surveyor)

-Foreman/Supervisors

While for Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics, the sectors on SEEK that displayed continued demand for labour and year-on-year growth were:

-Machine Operators

-Road Transport

-Couriers, Drivers and Postal Services

With the Wellington labour market improving, it’s important for job seekers to stand out and get noticed by prospective employers.

“By a candidate detailing their work experience and what they are looking for in their next role via their SEEK Profile, it allows the employers to search for them via our SEEK Talent Search Database, which could result in a job interview or a new job in the industry that they’re seeking,” Ms Faulding explained.

Across New Zealand, SEEK job ad growth remains in the black, with 3.5 per cent more job ads than 12 months ago. Plus there is also a 1 per cent rise in the national month-on-month SEEK Employment Index, which indicates reasonable health between opportunities available and the number of candidates applying for positions.
