Record numbers expected at Sunday’s bike market

Auckland Transport media release

10 June 2016

Record numbers expected at Sunday’s bike market

Cycling in Auckland is booming with record numbers taking to two wheels and the biggest ever bike market to be held this Sunday, 12 June in the city centre. AT is expecting large crowds at The Great Auckland Bike Market to be held at the Cloud, Queen’s Wharf between 10am and 3pm.

The bike market, which has moved to a bigger venue to accommodate the expected numbers, is an opportunity to buy or sell second hand or new bikes. Entry is free and there is no fee to sell or buy bikes.

It comes at a time when cycling numbers have never been higher with a 55% increase in cycle trips on Grafton Gully Cycleway in May 2016 compared with the same month last year and an almost 50% increase on the Northwestern Cycleway in the past year.

A key reason for the increase is the new cycleways we have built over recent years says Kathryn King AT, Cycling and Walking Manager.
“The pink Lightpath which opened late last year has been hugely popular as has Grafton Gully Cycleway. The numbers of people cycling on these routes is leading to increases in other parts of the network and big increases in bike sales,” she says.

People are invited to bring their bike or bike parts to sell or swap. There will also be free repairs, maintenance workshops, entertainment, street food, fashion, a chance to try before you buy, and plenty of beautiful new and pre-loved bikes to admire.
