700,000 visitors break a new record at Canterbury Museum

700,000th visitor to Canterbury Museum, Mackenzie Granger (2 years) and her mother Kylie Granger.

Canterbury Museum has welcomed a record breaking 700,000 visitors in the current financial year, 17 days before the year has ended.

This is the highest-ever number of visitors for the Museum and its special exhibition Quake City and beats the current record of 665,866 set in the 2015 financial year.

Kylie Granger and her children Mackenzie and Olivia from Mairehau visited the Museum on Saturday 11th of June and they came in to enjoy Discovery, the children’s hands-on natural world experience.

Mackenzie who is 2 years old was the actual 700,000th visitor. “She thought it was really funny at first” said Kylie, “and when she realized it was a special achievement she had a dance around with her sister”.

The Grangers are regular visitors to Canterbury Museum and like to look at everything, with the children really enjoying the Antarctic Gallery ride-on skidoo and Mackenzie’s favourite, the live tarantulas.

Museum Director Anthony Wright anticipates record breaking attendance will continue throughout the next year.

“With our current exhibition Alternative Radio bringing in significant numbers to live music gigs and broadcasts, the numbers will only increase in September with the opening of the spectacular Air New Zealand 75 Years: Our Nation. The World. Connected.”
