Celebrate Matariki and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori at Auckland Museum
Nau mai, piki mai ki Tāmaki Paenga Hira ki te whakahōnore te Wiki o te Reo Māori me Matariki -
Celebrate Matariki and Māori Language Week at Auckland War Memorial Museum this month.
To celebrate Matariki and Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), Auckland Museum is holding a wide range of free events for visitors to enjoy.
This coming weekend from June 17-19 the Museum will light up orange and yellow alongside other Auckland landmarks to celebrate Matariki, with orange referencing the sun and yellow the stars.
Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori runs from 4 July – 10 July, and this year the Museum celebrates 'Generations of Reo', with each day representing a different generation spanning 200 years of our history. Enjoy a performance, a game or participate in an art session with one of our friendly educators.
On Sunday 10th July two big events will close out both Matariki and Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori- the annual Matariki Art Market and Kaporangi Kiriata Te Reo Māori Film Day.
Kaporangi Kiriata means reaching for the stars, and that is what will be happening at the first-ever Te Reo Māori film programme at the Museum. Featuring a full day of Te Reo Māori shorts, dramatic works and documentaries and music videos, the event has been curated by Pita Turei and Leo Koziol of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival.
A full schedule of films is available on the Museum’s website. Kaporangi Kiriata Te Reo Māori Film Day runs from 11am-4pm in the Museum’s Auditorium on Sunday 10th July.
Now in its fifth year, the Matariki Art Market continues to celebrate skilled and innovative Māori artists, musicians, performers and poets. Grab the chance to purchase unique works from some of Tāmaki Makaurau’s leading creatives- jewellery designers, painters, carvers and more. Enjoy dynamic Māori culture from spoken word poets, live music and live carving demonstrations throughout the day.
The Matariki Art Market runs from 10am-5pm in the Atrium and galleries on Sunday 10th July..
All activities are free and more information can be found on aucklandmusueum.com.
