Triple act performance from Tasman Sea lows

In the North Island today, most people will see rain or showers as a low pressure system moves across the centre of the Island. Showers will gradually clear on Tuesday, but this is not the last of the wet weather – another low is waiting in the wings over the Tasman Sea, bringing further wet weather to the North Island on Wednesday and Thursday. In contrast, the weather over the South Island this week is expected to be much more settled, with just a weak southerly change moving up the east coast on Thursday bringing a few showers and cooler temperatures.

Rain will develop in the far north on Tuesday night and is expected to spread southwards over the North Island on Wednesday, before turning to showers during Thursday. Heavy falls are possible for those in the north and east of the Island, and MetService are keeping a watchful eye on the areas most at risk of heavy rain.

“It is likely that we will see large rainfall accumulations in some places in the east of the North Island late on Wednesday and into Thursday,” said MetService Meteorologist Claire Flynn. “However, at this stage, there is some uncertainty regarding where the heaviest rainfall will be concentrated. For this reason, people should keep up to date with the forecasts, as Severe Weather Watches and Warnings could be issued for some areas as we get nearer to the event.”

Once the low pressure system moves away, the weather should clear up on Friday and intoSaturday. “However, we have a repeat performance over the Tasman Sea into next weekend, with yet another low forming and approaching New Zealand later in the weekend,” Flynn said.
