The capital celebrates 115 years of Soup Kitchen
compassion
“You picked me up off the
street, fed me, loved me back to health.” This is what
one guest said of the Compassion Soup Kitchen.
In the past 12 months, the Compassion Soup Kitchen served 9,939 breakfasts and 17,493 dinners. Providing two hot meals a day six days a week, two social workers to work one on one with guests, free computer access and opportunities to participate in meaningful activities, the Compassion Soup Kitchen supports people in need to live with dignity in the community.
This year the Compassion Soup Kitchen celebrates 115 years of operation. This service is possible due to the goodwill and generosity of the people of Wellington and beyond.
On Friday 1 July the Compassion Soup Kitchen hosts its Annual Street Appeal with a variety of activities happening across Wellington. Over 200 volunteers will be out on the streets of the capital collecting donations from the public.
On the evening of Friday 1 July the Compassion Soup Kitchen Sound Bites fundraising concert will held at St Joseph’s Church, Mt Victoria. This is a musical celebration featuring Cantoris, members of the Wellington Youth Choir and students of the New Zealand School of Music. With both classical and jazz music on the programme, this is not one to be missed. Doors will open at 6.30pm with the concerting starting at 7pm. The event is door sales only and tickets are $20 waged and $5 unwaged.
In a new initiative, the Compassion Soup Kitchen is engaging thousands of local students to create a city-wide ‘Soup Kitchen for a Day’. Based on the model of learn – think - act, students are encouraged to critically discuss challenges our guests face and take action to support guests of the Soup Kitchen. Some of the projects being undertaken include can drives, sausage sizzles, bake sales, cook-offs and making and selling soup to fellow students.
The Compassion Soup Kitchen Street Appeal offers the opportunity to engage with the public and raise awareness of the plight of many New Zealanders struggling to make ends meet. The Soup Kitchen encourages individuals to give generously to ensure the continuation of support to Wellington’s most vulnerable community.
