Auckland’s architecture shines at world awards
Auckland’s innovative and stunning architecture has been recognised at the prestigious 2016 World Architecture Festival (WAF).
This year’s festival includes nine New Zealand finalists, three of which are Auckland Council projects: Te Oro music and arts centre in Glen Innes, Te Ara I Whiti – the Lightpath in the central city and Kopupaka Reserve in west Auckland
Auckland Council’s Design Champion Ludo Campbell-Reid is thrilled to see Auckland’s architecture recognised on the world stage.
“I've always felt we had the ability to be world beaters in design. In recent times we’ve undergone a genuine shift in our thinking about Kiwi urbanism, and our attitude to the buildings, places and spaces that make up our city.”
“This incredible achievement, in the world’s most prestigious architecture awards programme, marks a turning point. Auckland is now recognised as a world-class, design-savvy city,” said Campbell-Reid.
The WAF awards are internationally acknowledged and feature the best buildings from leading architecture practices.
The finalists have been selected from 58 countries and winners will be announced in November. One award given out in the prestigious programme, the World Building of the Year, was previously won by the Auckland Art Gallery in 2013.
