Hutt City Youth Awards open for 2016 nominations
The Hutt City Youth Awards opened for nominations on Monday 25th July with the start of the new school term, Chris Bishop MP (Chair of the Organising Committee) announced today.
“The Hutt City Youth Awards are all about shining a light on the fantastic young people we have here in the Hutt”, says Mr Bishop.
“In so many different ways and so many areas, young people are making a big difference in the Hutt community. The Hutt City Youth Awards, now in their second year, recognise the achievements and potential of our young people.”
Mayor Ray Wallace, Chairperson of the Judging Panel, said that he was thrilled in 2015 by the talent and commitment of the nominees. "We are so lucky having these young people being part of our City. I’m sure this year nominees will be of that same high calibre," Mayor Wallace said.
The Awards once again offer eight categories including leadership, contribution to sport, the arts, entrepreneurship, embracing diversity, science and technology, service to the community, and overcoming adversity. The winner of each category will be awarded a $500 cash prize at the Awards Ceremony to be held on 21 September.
Young people aged 12-21 are eligible for nomination provided they have a strong connection to Lower Hutt, such as living or going to school in the area.
This year’s Hutt City Youth Awards have a new brand mark, designed by Wainuiomata resident and WelTec student Keli-Ann Wilson. The brand mark has eight colours which represent the eight award categories and eight values.
“We’re delighted to have WelTec return as the lead sponsor of the Awards,” said Mr Bishop. “They’re a big part of making this year’s Awards even better than in 2015 which is really exciting.”
“The quality of the nominees last year was outstanding, with the organising committee and the judges being blown away by what these young people are achieving.”
In addition to WelTec’s sponsorship, other local organisations are also sponsoring the awards, including GNS Science, Label & Litho, The Hutt News, Goodtime Music Academy, The Hodge Group, Westpac, Hutt City Council’s Youth Council, and Natraj School of Dance.”
Nominations can be made online at www.huttcityyouthawards.co.nz. Nominations close on Friday 26 August.
