Haast to Otago highway closing at neck of Lake Wanaka 5pm

Haast to Otago highway closing at neck of Lake Wanaka 5pm, reopening in morning

1 August 2016 | SOUTHERN REGION

West Coast to Otago SH 6 closing from 5 pm tonight Bean Bluff, next to Lake Wanaka, aiming to reopen 8 am Tuesday

The highway connecting Otago and the West Coast via the Haast Pass will be closed on the Otago side from tonight at 5 pm for safety reasons.

A slip near Boundary Creek, between Makarora and the Neck* of Lake Wanaka, closed the highway yesterday. It was cleared just before 10 am, with slight delays for drivers today.

The slip was at the same site – Bean Bluff – as an earlier slip in 2012, although it was not as substantial as that slip, says John Jarvis, Senior Network Manager, NZ Transport Agency.

“We want to reopen tomorrow morning at 8 am, however this will be conditional on safety work going to plan overnight. We will update as soon as we can in the morning if we are going to be delayed in reopening by 8 am Tuesday,” he says.

Drivers need to factor in the time it takes to get through State Highway 6 before setting off this afternoon and if in doubt, delay until tomorrow.
