Thinking about standing for election? Don’t prevaricate

5 August 2016

Thinking about standing for election? Don’t leave it to the last minute!

Have you thought about standing for election to council or community board in the Waikato district? Time is running out for local candidates to step forward for the October elections.

Electoral Officer, Dale Ofsoske is reminding people they only have until midday on Friday 12 August to get their nominations in.

More than 60 information booklets have been given to interested people with 22 nominations received to date for positions of mayor, councillor, community board or the Te Kauwhata Licensing Trust.

Mr Ofsoske says if you’re a New Zealand citizen, over 18 years of age and you’re on the electoral roll you can stand as a candidate.

“We need people who want to make a difference and represent their whanau and community for the next three years.”

To stand as an elected member you must be nominated by two people who are enrolled in the district, ward or community in which you intend to stand, and pay a deposit of $200. Nominations close at noon on Friday 12 August.

Mr Ofsoske urges potential candidates to get their nominations in before next Friday. “Early nominations give us time to ensure candidates have included everything on their application, as we aren’t able to provide an extension to the strict noon deadline.”
