Oneroa is getting an extension
Recreational walkers, people on bikes and other pavement
bound wheelers can get excited, as a link between Oneroa and
Alfred Cox walkway's is set to begin construction.
The link along Centennial Marine Drive and Beacon Street will include 600m of concrete, three raised courtesy crossings, bollards and landscaping. The connection will pass through Awapuni School, completing a circuit through Alfred Cox Park.
Environmental and Regulatory Group Manager, Kevin Strongman says "The Oneroa walkway has proved to be such a big success, and an expansion of this cycle and walkway network will further enhance these experiences allowing people to get out and enjoy our coastal and river environment.
This extension will tie in with some of the other smaller projects we have embarked on earlier this year. Council have hosted several planting and revegetation days in Alfred Cox Park to engage the community to connect with significant spaces around the City. Waikanae Stream has had cleanup days and we have recently replaced a series of phoenix palms with native plants.
"A safe and natural connection from Oneroa through Alfred Cox Park will let people enjoy the effort the community has put into restoring the stream." Says Mr Strongman
Work is set to commence on August 15 by Siteworx on behalf of Tairawhiti Roads and is expected to take six weeks to complete. During construction, traffic may be reduced to a single lane along Centennial Marine Drive and Beacon Street, so patience is advised.
Dedicated pathways for walkers and people on bikes coincides with other initiatives Council are undertaking, aimed at getting out and being active in a safe environment for our community.
New Zealand Transport Agency will fund 62% of this project through Tairawhiti Roads
