Swabbing Set to Go Ahead Tonight
Palmerston North City Council will swab the city water supply pipes overnight tonight, running a big sponge through the pipes to clean them out.
“Residents sometimes experience discoloured water coming out of taps,” says Council water asset engineer Dora Luo. “This is because of the slightly high iron and manganese content in our water, and also because sediment builds up in the pipes.
“Regular swabbing removes the sediment and minimises the risk of water discolouration.”
The swabbing is scheduled for 6.30pm on Monday 15 August until 3am tomorrow. There is a small risk of discoloured water while the swabbing takes place and for 48 hours afterwards.
Residents connected to the Council water supply could potentially be affected. The exceptions are people who live in Ashhurst, Bunnythorpe, Kelvin Grove and Longburn.
Advice for residents
• Reserve drinking water for tonight and tomorrow morning
• Minimise your water use overnight to avoid discoloured water getting in to the pipe system within your property
• To prevent discoloured water getting into your hot water cylinder, run your cold tap on Tuesday morning and check the water is clear before you turn on the hot water tap
• Check the water clarity before using your washing machine to prevent discoloured water staining your laundry
If your water is discoloured
Run the cold water taps for up to 15 minutes. If your water is still discoloured after 15 minutes, contact Palmerston North City Council on 06 356 8199.
