Demolition paves way for new administration building

The countdown is on for Council’s new Awarua building, as demolition starts on the old administration building on Fitzherbert Street.

Protective fencing has recently been erected by demolition contractors Ceres NZ, and internal stripping work has already begun.

The demolition process is set to be complete in early October, with construction of the new Awarua building set to start later in the month.

Council Chief Executive, Judy Campbell says “It’s good to finally get this work underway, staff are looking forward to being together in a safe, purpose built building.”

Ceres NZ intend to recycle and reuse materials from the demolition site where possible. This includes concrete, fixtures and materials like insulation, bricks and metals.

Gisborne Holdings Limited have already begun this work by repurposed air conditioning units and heat pumps from the Fitzherbert Street building into cabins at the Waikanae Top 10 Holiday Park. Computer networking cabinets and cables have also been stored for future use.

Gisborne Holdings LTD General Manager, Matt Feisst says "We're taking all practicable steps to minimise landfill waste, and make cost savings by reusing equipment."

Site conditions are challenging in some areas with asbestos present in much of 1980’s and 1950’s parts of the building.

“We have to do the demolition in stages, while our asbestos removal crew isolates and cleans affected areas of the building, the other team strips and removes all of the interior.” Says Mr Feisst.

Designs for the Awarua building, designed by consultant Derek Lardelli and Chow-Hill Architects feature modern space and power saving designs which will save on costs in the long term.

Ms Campbell goes on to say “Having staff in the same building will have an immediate impact on how efficient we are, and having heating embedded in the building design will give us tangible savings.”
