Auckland’s first living building gets a boost from Foundation North
Auckland’s first ‘living building’ is one step closer to construction with a grant of $20,000 from Foundation North, the community trust for Auckland and Northland. The building is an initiative of the Sustainable Coastlines Charitable Trust which is looking to construct the building for use as a flagship environmental education facility in Wynyard Quarter.
“We were pleased to receive a number of applications from Auckland and Northland’s environment and conservation groups,” Foundation Chief Executive Jennifer Gill said. “As the population of the region grows, the protection and restoration of natural habitats will be critical to sustaining regional biodiversity, as well as meeting our needs for places to reconnect to the natural environment. This was also the motivation behind our recent decision to create a special $5 million fund to support the exploration of innovative solutions to restore the health of the Hauraki Gulf and its islands.”
Other environment and conservation focused groups that received grants included Awhitu Peninsula Landcare Inc for eradicating mustelids, the Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society Inc for translocate Little Spotted Kiwis to Shakespear Regional Park and the Sea Cleaners Trust to run land and sea clean-up operations.
The grants were among 86 made to local and regional organisations in the Foundation’s Quick Response category for funding of up to $20,000. The grants totalled $766,000 and bring the total grants made by the Foundation for the year from April 2016 to $10,795,000.
Ms Gill says the five rounds of Quick Response Grants made by Foundation North each year are of high value to the not-for-profit applicants.
“Each year we receive approximately 800 applications for small grants for funding to support sports and recreation, arts events, community initiatives and programmes that need our support in the region. Our Quick Response Grants are perfect for groups who need an eight-week response to help them get the funding they need to help make change in their community.”
Applications for the Foundation’s next Quick Response Grant close on 10th October 2016.

Background
Foundation North holds in trust
for the Auckland and Northland communities an endowment, or
putea, of over a billion dollars. This comes from the sale
of the community’s shares in what was previously the
Auckland Savings Bank. That endowment allows us to make
millions of dollars in grants each year to not-for-profit
groups in Auckland and Northland. This means we can support
major community events, projects and facilities and
not-for-profit organisations for a long time to come.
