Chorus cabinet art project hitting the streets again
Chorus cabinet art project hitting the streets again
Dunedin (Tuesday, 13 September 2016) – From boring boxes to head-turning street art, more Chorus cabinets will be beautified over the summer.
Dunedin’s fourth round of the Chorus cabinet art project is underway with Chorus and the Dunedin City Council working together to transform more cabinets around Dunedin into artworks in the streets.
DCC Team Leader Urban Design Dr Glen Hazelton says, “The project makes our streets more vibrant and interesting, and we’re looking forward to working with Chorus again to add to Dunedin’s collection of cabinet art.”
Chorus will pay $1000 for each cabinet, which includes the design, painting and application of graffiti guard. The graffiti guard is supplied and materials – such as paint and brushes – are paid for on top of the fee.
Artists are given instructions on how to prepare the cabinet and graffiti-guard it once the painting is finished and paid when the work is satisfactorily completed.
In this fourth round of cabinets, Chorus is calling for proposals from Dunedin artists for the following locations:
• Corner of Ross and Michie Streets, Roslyn
• 159 Wakari Road (opposite intersection with Helensburgh Road)
• Corner of Malvern Street and Fulton Road
• Corner of Highcliff Road and Somerville Street
• 4 Caldwell Street, Brockville
• 624 Kaikorai Valley Road
• 394 Pine Hill Road
• Corner of Pitcairn Street and Kenmure Road
• 24 Union Street West
• Corner of McFadden Drive and Gladstone Road, Mosgiel
• Corner of Three Mile Hill Road and Flagstaff-Whare Flat Road
Note: The final locations will depend on the artworks provided, resource consent and approval from affected parties.
Dr Hazelton says, “The DCC helps to collate the proposals and organises resource consent for the works. We would love to see proposals from interested artists around the city.”
To be considered to work on a cabinet, please supply:
• an A4 hand sketch of your design
• the location of the cabinet your design is for
• a brief description of what the design means
• a brief biography of any relevant experience.
Proposals should be sent to the DCC by 12pm on 7 October 2015. Please let the DCC know if you would like your proposal returned after it is assessed.
Chorus will make the final decision on which art works it chooses, consult with the adjoining landowner if necessary and engage the artists to do the work. It is envisaged that the work will be completed between November and March, once consents are finalised.
The Chorus website has a gallery of finished art. Existing murals can be seen at http://www.chorus.co.nz/cabinet-art.
