Christchurch Civic Awards announced for 2016

The Christchurch City Council has announced the recipients of the Christchurch Civic Awards for 2016.

The annual awards recognise significant service individuals and groups have given to benefit the Christchurch community. This service can be across a range of areas have included heritage preservation, community service, youth advocacy, education and international relations, or community affairs.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel says it is an absolute honour to announce the recipients of these awards.

“This year's award winners are from a wide cross section of society and I'm delighted that they have been awarded the highest Civic honour."

Recipients are nominated by members of the public with winners selected by the Civic Awards Subcommittee.

Awards Subcommittee Chair, Councillor Yani Johanson says all the recipients have gone above and beyond to contribute to their community.

"The Civic Awards are a small way for Council to say thank you and acknowledge the extraordinary efforts groups and individuals go to for the good of our city. This year we feature a diverse group of recipients who have made signification contributions across a variety of spheres. It is the people we are recognising that help make Christchurch a special place for us all.”

Of the many nominations submitted by Christchurch residents, four organisations and three individuals are included in this year’s awards, which are to be presented by the current Mayor at a special ceremony in November.

The 2016 Civic Awards winners are:

1. Akaroa Lighthouse Preservation Society - for heritage preservation

2. Independent Fisheries Limited - for international relations and co-operation

3. Christchurch Community Response Volunteers – for community service

4. 304th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, United States Air Force – for community service

5. Hong Hu – for services to education and international relations

6. Ira Mitchell-Kirk - for community service

7. Josiah Tavita Tualamali’I - for youth advocacy
