Media Statement

Independent Māori Statutory Board Presents:

The Māori Report for Tāmaki Makaurau

The Independent Māori Statutory Board will launch The Māori Report for Tāmaki Makaurau 2016 at the Auckland University Business School on Tuesday 15 November at 5.30pm. The launch will be co-hosted with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga as part of their Indigenous Research Conference.

The Māori Report was commissioned by the Board and informed by the Board’s Expert Data Panel, headed by Māori development champion Sir Mason Durie.

Data in the report is used to measure the extent to which the goals of The Māori Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau, released by the Board in 2012, have been achieved.

The Report provides baseline information about the current situation for Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau as it relates to aspirations captured in the Plan.

The report compares Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau with Māori elsewhere in Aotearoa and shows that Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau generally fare better in gaining governance and management roles, participate more in local body elections, have higher household incomes and more apprenticeship opportunities.

The report shows how marae, iwi and whānau collectively contribute to Tāmaki Makaurau, providing its distinctive identity and bringing strength, character and compassion to the region. “The unique competitive advantage that Māori heritage offers Tāmaki Makaurau is a story not told often enough”, says Sir Mason Durie.

The report takes a positive, future-focused approach, however, it does highlight some areas of concern around the decrease of Te Reo Māori speakers, disengaged youth and freshwater decline.

The report also brings to light the lack of data in several areas particularly in capturing data-sets that relate to Māori leadership in a cultural context and the contribution of Māori collectives, such as whānau, marae and kura. The Board will, therefore, continue to work with Māori, Auckland Council and data collectors such as Statistics New Zealand to develop data sets which capture information that better tells a holistic story of Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Board Chairman David Taipari says, “The report is a vital tool for the Board in its future advocacy work and partnership with Council and other organisations, to improve outcomes for Māori and benefit all those who live in Tāmaki Makaurau”.
