Kaikoura Earthquake media release 13

Kaikoura Earthquake media release 13

18 November 2016, 0700hrs

Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management Director Sarah Stuart-Black says the national response effort following Monday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Kaikoura is beginning to move toward recovery.

“Our priorities remain the same; taking care of essential needs such as food, shelter and medical requirements but our focus will start to shift to provision of further support and longer term solutions.

“We are continuing to deliver support to quake affected communities. This morning the HMNZS Canterbury is due back in Kaikoura from Lyttleton with supplies, including power generators and fuel.

“Responders are working hard to assess damage, restore lifelines, utilities, complete the infrastructure repairs needed and restore access. We will be focusing on those rural isolated and vulnerable households and continue to work with communities through the transition from response to recovery.

“We encourage those affected to utilise the help lines offering support. A Government helpline (0800 779 997) has been set up to provide information on financial assistance and other support available.

“Aftershocks are continuing to be felt in many parts of New Zealand and we know that this can cause stress and anxiety. If you need support or are concerned about how the situation is affecting you or your whānau, you can call the 24/7 Earthquake Support Line - 0800 777 846 - for support and advice.

“There have been reports of multiple landslides blocking streams or river valleys, particularly in remote and rugged areas of the inland and seaward Kaikoura Ranges. We urge people in those areas to be especially vigilant and to keep clear of river valleys and outlets. Landslide dams can break quickly, and release large volumes of water and sediment as a flood wave. Homes at potential risk have been advised to evacuate.

“Despite reports, the Inland Road is NOT open to the public and will not be open to the public by Saturday. There is concern that cracks may open and slips may occur due to the current deteriorating weather. Teams working to open the Inland road were pulled out on Thursday due to unsafe conditions.

“It is not known how long it will take for this route to be clear and safe. Members of the public must not attempt to access the road.”
