Coastal Pacific update
Carriages used on the Coastal Pacific scenic passenger train are being shifted to the popular TranzAlpine and Northern Explorer services in the wake of the Kaikoura earthquake.
“Unfortunately extensive damage to the rail line near Kaikoura means we have had to cancel the Coastal Pacific service for the remainder of the season,” Head of Scenic Journeys Gavin Rutherford says.
“We regret the impact this cancellation will have on the communities along the line, particularly Kaikoura and Marlborough, but the route is currently unusable and is expected to remain that way for some months.”
Mr Rutherford says while it is disappointing for these communities, and for those who planned to travel on the Coastal Pacific, high demand on the other tourism services will benefit from the additional carriages.
“Both the TranzAlpine and the Northern Explorer are regularly fully booked over summer.”
KiwiRail will look to redeploy affected staff to other roles.
The Coastal Pacific normally runs a daily return journey between Christchurch and Picton during the summer season (late September to May).
All booked passengers who are now unable to travel will be provided a full refund.
