Civil Defence update from Kaikoura – 10:30am 22.11.16

Military convoy:

A military convoy bringing essential supplies, including fuel, will arrive into Kaikoura today.

There are 14 specialist vehicles, including four fuel tankers, with the remainder carrying other supplies, such as food.

The Kaikoura Emergency Access Road (Inland Road) remains closed to the public, with only approved vehicles allowed.

South Coast:

If you want to go walking along the beach, please avoid the South Coast because helicopters and cliff abseiling teams are working to sluice down the loose debris. There is a high danger of rocks falling onto the beach with no warning.

Public showers:

There are spaces available for the mobile shower unit in Kaikoura, set up by New Zealand Defence Force. Up to 120 residents a day who are without water at home can freshen up in the communal shower. To register, phone 319 5026. Women are at 4pmand Men at 5pm. The showers are in a shared cubicle in the unit. BYO towels, soap and shampoo. As long as there is enough water, showers will be available from 4-6pm daily.

Water usage:

Residents need to continue to conserve water, which means no flushing the toilets. Please take short showers. No baths or washing machines. Wash your clothes in a bucket and tip outside. And, remember to continue to boil water.

Community meeting at Churchill Park at 1pm today. There’ll be a representative from NZTA attending.

Building update:

Total completed building inspections is 1137 - 120 Yellow; 36 Red; 981 White; which is 63%

Be prepared:

With supplies coming into Kaikoura, it’s a great time to stock up your emergency supplies. Please remember to have sufficient food, bottled water and essential supplies to be self-sufficient for at least three days in the event of a major aftershock or other event.

This includes medication, torch and batteries; supplies of nappies etc for infants, and food for pets.
