Changes proposed for Parnell streets

Parnell is set for quieter streets and improved access to local shops, parks and schools with a proposal announced today by Auckland Transport.

AT is seeking feedback until 23 December on a new residential parking zone and cycleway in Parnell.

The residential parking zone in the area around Gladstone Rd and St Stephens Ave will prioritise parking for local residents, businesses and visitors, over commuters who park in the area during the day. The proposed cycleway is a protected on-road cycle lane on both sides of Gladstone Rd and St Stephens Ave connecting Parnell Rd with The Strand.

“It’s going to be fantastic for people living in the area,” says Kathryn King, AT cycling, walking and safety manager.

“We want to create an environment that makes it easier and safer for people of all ages to get around their community by bike or on foot and this project does that in two ways.

“It will reduce the number of people driving into the area looking for car parks during the week and it provides a protected cycleway. This will make it safer and easier for people of all ages to get to local cafes, schools and access the waterfront.

“The cycleway will also provide people living in the wider area improved access to the city centre for work or study. It is part of a wider strategy to improve the transport network in Auckland by providing people with more travel options.”

The proposed residential parking zone will greatly reduce commuter parking thereby improving parking availability for residents, their visitors and customers of local shops. The residential parking zone will give residents and business owners the option to apply for parking permits for themselves and one-day coupons for people visiting or working.

Visitors to the area will be able to park on-street for up to two hours. The initiative is part of a wider strategy that has seen similar zones implemented in St Mary’s Bay, Mt Eden and Freemans Bay.

Auckland Transport is working with project partners Auckland Council and the Government through the NZ Transport Agency and the Urban Cycleways Programme on a $200m programme of cycle improvements from 2015 to 2018.
