Palmerston North set to offer support package to Kaikoura

5 December 2016

Palmerston North City Council is set to offer a $25,000 support package to assist Kaikoura following the 7.8 earthquake last month.

The Council’s Economic Development Committee has unanimously agreed to make the offer to the Kaikoura District Council.

Palmerston North Mayor Grant Smith says Kaikoura is in great need of help.

“The District has suffered tremendous damage and I understand Kaikoura Mayor Winston Gray, Councillors and Council staff have been working around the clock.

“We received a good deal of support from territorial authorities both near and far following the 2004 Manawatu floods, and we need to assist Kaikoura now.”

The Committee’s recommendation requires formal approval from the full Palmerston North City Council at its final meeting for the year on 19 December.
