Fire in mental health unit at Wellington Regional Hospital

A client set fire to a mattress in a bedroom at the Te Whare O Matairangi unit at Wellington Regional Hospital campus.

The incident happened at 6.25am Wednesday December 7.

No clients were injured. Two staff are being checked for smoke inhalation at the emergency department at Wellington Regional Hospital.

The fire sprinklers in the unit went off and put out the fire. The fire service also attended.

Staff followed normal fire procedures and clients in the unit were evacuated.

One area of the unit is currently closed because of water from the fire sprinklers. Maintenance staff are working in the area, and it is expected to reopen in a few hours.

The rest of the unit is fully functional.
