Large scrub fire closes State
Highway 7 between Springs Junction and Culverden, alternate
highway Picton to Christchurch
The NZ Transport Agency closed the Lewis Pass road (State Highway 7) after 12.30 pm today through Lake Sumner Conservation Park/ the Tekoa Range as a scrub fire is spreading near the highway.
The closure is between Springs Junction and Culverden.
The alternate route coming south is via State Highway 6 to Inangahua, then Reefton, SH 7, then back onto SH 73, the Arthur’s Pass/ Otira route between the West Coast and Canterbury.
This is a sizeable detour which will add another two-and-a-half hours to the journey between Picton and Christchurch.
People who are able to delay their journeys today, probably should do so.
