Feminist Parenting Forum

Feminist Parenting Forum

Auckland Women’s Centre is hosting a forum on Feminist Parenting in Mt Eden tomorrow night. A large crowd is expected to turn up to hear speakers Emily Writes, Tania Pouwhare and Sisilia Eteuati share their experiences and insights.

In the wake of the outpouring of public outrage about the recent Wellington College incident, and the protests in Wellington that drew hundreds of young people, feminism is more relevant than ever to how we raise children. The massive global turnout to the Women’s Marches is further sign that interest in feminism is on the rise from women and men of all ages.

Auckland Women’s Centre Manager Leonie Morris says that parents have a tough job balancing the demands of raising children with economic pressures and work obligations: “Supporting parents is a feminist issue. We’d like to see the government do more. We support the campaign to extend paid parental leave to 26 weeks and the campaign for equal pay for women.

Emily Writes (Pakeha) is a Wellington based blogger, editor of the Spinoff Parents and author of a new book about parenting, Rants in the Dark. Tania Pouwhare, Ngai Tuhoe, works as a social intrapraneur for Auckland Council’s Southern Initiative and spent ten years working for the London-based Women’s Resource Centre. Sisilia Eteuati, Samoan, is a lawyer, blogger, poet and single mum. The event is facilitated by Papatuanuku Nahi, (Ngāpuhi nui tonu), Co-director, Awa Associates

After the speeches there will be plenty of time for kōrero and pātai and a chance to connect with other feminist parents.
