Virtually on Track - Join the goosechase!
Join the goosechase!
Monday, April 3: Fun outdoor adventures and digital technology combine in an innovative school holiday activity that encourages kids and adults alike to explore the natural playgrounds our forest, parks and reserves provide.
From April 14 to 30, Sport Bay of Plenty’s Virtually on Track is hosting an app-based Amazing Race- style event at three Bay of Plenty locations: McLaren Falls Park, The Redwoods (Whakarewarewa Forest) and the Fairbrother Loop Track, Ohope Beach.
The free app, goosechase, challenges teams to complete a series of physical and mental ‘missions’ specific to each location. Each mission is worth a certain number of points, with bonus points awarded for going the extra mile, so teams can compete to reach the top score.
From posing with wildlife to finding native plants, goosechase missions are a fun and exciting way to explore and play in our local parks and reserves.
Recreation Advisor Lauren Atkinson says this app is an innovative way to utilise digital technology, while getting the kids outdoors and having fun these holidays.
“Smartphones and digital devices are an everyday part of our lives. Virtually on Track utilises this technology as a means to explore, play and be active around the Bay of Plenty. Glow worms, native wildlife, unique track and trails – there’s so much to discover. While on the hunt to complete your next goosechase mission, you never know what you may learn along the way!”
Lauren adds, “goosechase has been tried and tested by the Sport Bay of Plenty team. It provided plenty of laughs and friendly competition – plus it’s guaranteed to get the heart pumping!”
The app is free to download for both Apple and Android smartphones – simply sign up and get exploring. The games will be available for use anytime between 9am Friday, April 14 and 7.30pm Saturday, April 30, so users can complete missions and explore the locations at their leisure during the holidays.
Should you require some assistance, Sport Bay of Plenty Recreation Advisors will be stationed at the three Gem Sites on Wednesday, April 19 between 10am and 12pm.
Virtually on Track is a collaborative initiative between Sport Bay of Plenty, Sport NZ and the Department of Conservation, designed to connect locals and visitors with the Bay of Plenty’s beautiful parks, spaces and reserves through digital technology and recreational activities.
