MOTORCYCLISTS are being urged to be vigilant this Easter with night falling earlier and a forecast for wet weather.
Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council Chair Mark Gilbert said fatalities are down on the same time last year, but motorcyclists need to stay alert as they ride into winter.
“Seven motorcyclists have been killed on our roads this year. This is still seven too many, but it’s a big improvement on the 16 deaths for the same period in 2016.
“The lower toll shows safety is front-of-mind for riders and the messages are getting through,” Mr Gilbert said.
“This time of year brings its own challenges for motorcyclists. Rain, wind and ice are extra hazards, and as the days grow shorter, many will be riding in the dark. Like other motorists, riders need to slow down and take extra care.
“Now’s a great time to take a Ride Forever course to brush up on riding skills, check your helmet and gear is in good shape and get your bike serviced. We want everyone working to get the motorcyclist road toll down even further.”
Motorcyclists accounted for 16% of the road deaths in 2016 with 52 killed and a over 1,000 injured. The five riders killed over the official 2016/2017 Christmas period accounted for 25% of the holiday road toll. By contrast, motorcyclists make up just 3% of the vehicles on the road.
