WEATHER UPDATE: Heavy rain causes surface flooding

6h ago

Heavy rain in Christchurch has caused surface flooding in some low-lying areas.

Cyclone Cook is bringing heavy rain to Christchurch.

The intersection of Maces and Ruru roads, in Bromley, has been closed because of flooding and there is surface flooding on other roads around the city, particularly around the Heathcote River which has topped its banks in some place.

"Drivers should take extreme care and if they have to drive through flood waters they should reduce their speed so they don't cause it to wash onto adjacent properties,'' said Christchurch City Council City Services General Manager David Adamson.

In the Flockton area temporary pumps have been activated and a close watch is being kept on water levels.

Council contractors are out throughout the city clearing grates, checking pumps and making sure there are no blockages in the drainage network.

They will remain on standby to respond to any problems that may arise if the heavy rain continues.

Geo-technical engineers are also on stand-by in the case of any slips on the Port Hills, where February’s fire has heightened the risk of land movement.

It is possible the rain may cause some ash and soil from the fire-damaged areas to get into the waterways, particularly the Heathcote.

The waterways are being closely monitored and contingency plans are in place to deal with that eventuality.

If you spot a blocked or overflowing public street drain you can report it to the Council’s Contact Centre by email or by phoning 941-8999.
