Regional Rents up by $3000 annually in just three years
Please find attached our latest Trade Me Property Rental Index with details on the New Zealand rental market for March.
What we're seeing
· Aucklanders and Wellingtonians are not alone in seeing rising rents. In the last three years rents in the regions (when we exclude Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) have increased $3000 a jump of 20% from $310 - $370
· Auckland's rents eased in March - down $5 from February to $515 and up just 3% in the last year.
· Since 2012 the average asking price for homes in Auckland has jumped 72% while median rents have gone up just 20%.To put that in context, a 20 per cent deposit for an Auckland property in 2012 was just over $100,000 or equivalent to 4.5 years of rent. In March 2017 that same deposit would need to be $183,000 or 7 years of rent.
· The Bay of Plenty is the third most expensive region to rent in the country with rents up $20 in March to hit another new record ($440).
· Canterbury is the only region to see rents decline on this time last year. It was down for the 20th month in a row
