Parking meter vandalism will cost ratepayers

Parking meter vandalism will cost ratepayers

The cost to ratepayers of a trail of damage by vandals to parking meters in the Blenheim CBD will run into hundreds of dollars to repair.

About three dozen kerbside parking meters have been damaged or broken into in the CBD during the last fortnight.

Parking sub-committee chairman Brian Dawson says it’s the worst stretch of vandalism to the town’s parking meters in a decade.

Parts for repairs have to be ordered from the US so there will also be a cost to the ratepayer in lost revenue from the parking spaces while the meters are out of action, he said.

Council and Police each have access to the footage from the CCTV security cameras that are located around the CBD in Blenheim, and this is being reviewed in the hope that offenders can be identified.

Councillor Dawson encouraged anyone with information about the damage to contact Blenheim Police.
