Māori eats and beats to star at Te Korakora on Federal
If you love great tunes and kai don’t miss Te Korakora on Federal – a free event in celebration of Māori street food, music and dance taking place on Thursday 22 June. Come down after work to Federal Street at SKYCITY Auckland, which will be transformed into a Māori street carnival for one night only as part of Matariki Festival 2017.
Experience the tastes, sights and sounds of Te Ao Māori to celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year. Taste the unique flavours of street kai as Māori chef Cameron Petley of MasterChef fame and SKYCITY Auckland’s Executive Chef for Conventions and Catering, Paul Barrett, work together to serve up tasty Māori-inspired cuisine.
Federal Street will come alive with the energy of Matariki; L.A.B. (Laughton & Brad Kora), A Hori George, Maisey Rika and band, young Māori singing sensation Tawaroa Kawana, RnR Music and Mai FM DJ09 are among the talented music line-up taking the stage. Watch electrifying live dance performances from Hawaiian entertainers Halau Hula o Moana Nui a Kiwa, the Poi Boys, and a not-to-be-missed LED poi demonstration - grab a glow-in-the-dark moko face-paint and party Matariki-style!
John Mortensen, SKYCITY’s Chief Operating Officer, says SKYCITY is proud to support Te Korakora on Federal for the second year running.
“This is a wonderful event, bringing together the best of Māori street food, music and dance to celebrate Matariki. SKYCITY has lit the Sky tower to resemble a sunrise in celebration of the Māori New Year and Auckland’s Matariki Festival, so having Te Korakora on Federal taking place right under our landmark tower is very special. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Federal Street for an event to remember,” he says.
Richard McWha, Auckland Council Arts and Culture Manager, agrees; “Te Korakora on Federal brings us together to celebrate Matariki and the important part Māori culture plays in our city’s identity. It’s a time of sharing and this vibrant street carnival will provide the opportunity to showcase our contemporary Māori culture to our many visitors in the city for rugby.”
Auckland Council’s Matariki Festival runs until 2 July. For more information about Te Korakora on Federal and other festival events seewww.matarikifestival.org.nz or phone 09 301 0101.
