New electric trucks for Palmerston North

New electric trucks for Palmerston North

Council has been successful in their application for the Low Emission Vehicle Contestable Fund from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

“This grant enables us to launch the transition to an electric vehicle fleet, where it might not have otherwise occurred until the technology for medium sized trucks is more established. We’re incredibly grateful to EECA for this grant.” Paul Compton, Logistics & Support Manager says.

$350,000 has been granted for two new electric trucks to replace the existing diesel trucks for solid waste and recyclable material collection.

The funding will go towards 50% of the cost of purchase of two electric trucks, as well as 50% of the installation costs for a charging infrastructure at the Awapuni Resource Recovery Park.

Council will be monitoring and reporting on the performance of the electric trucks compared to conventional trucks.

Transparency of reporting both within Council and to the public will ensure that the financial performance of the new trucks is visible.

The Low Emission Vehicles (LEV) Contestable Fund encourages innovation and investment that will accelerate the uptake of electric and other low emission vehicles in New Zealand.

The new vehicles will be operational by February 2018.
