Community calls for rethink on historic Petone Wharf
A petition signed by almost 1,000 Petone residents was handed today to Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace, urging the Council to reconsider its decision to demolish part of the historic Petone Wharf.
In early June the Hutt City Council voted to demolish 50m off the head of the Petone Wharf. The petition calls on the Hutt City Council to change their decision to partially demolish the wharf and instead retain and refurbish the wharf in full.
Residents supporting the petition are unhappy with the Council’s decision. “The wharf is an iconic part of the Hutt,” says Petone resident Cate Eaton. “To lose the wharf completely would have been awful, but I don’t see why we should remove any of it.”
“I’m backing the local residents on this, one hundred percent,” says Labour candidate for Hutt South Ginny Andersen. “A clear majority of people who submitted to Council wanted to see the entire wharf retained and fully refurbished. Their voice has been ignored.”
The Petone Wharf was built in 1883 and has been an important part of the Petone foreshore for 135 years.
