Christchurch – Our underground story: Take two

Christchurch – Our underground story: Take two

Have you ever wondered what goes on beneath your feet? This stunning lift-the-flap picture book lets you and your little ones explore Christchurch’s hidden city. You will discover the amazing work that Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) have done to repair and rebuild our city’s roads, bridges, pipes and retaining walls.

Following the success of the first print run of Christchurch – Our Underground Story, which sold out in under one week and has recently been recognised by winning a special award at the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand, Innovate NZ Awards of Excellence competition. The five SCIRT delivery teams (City Care, Fulton Hogan, Fletcher, Downer, and McConnell Dowell) recognise the value the book can bring to young minds, and have sponsored enough books for every primary school in Christchurch to receive a copy.

Author and former SCIRT engineer Phil Wilkins said “This will give the opportunity for the future engineers of Christchurch to gain an interest and wider understanding of the important work engineers do, simplify the complexity of engineering, and not take for granted what is vital for day-to-day living. “

To celebrate, eight lucky children from Rawhiti School gathered to witness the first school copy of the book being handed over by Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Nicky Wagner. Nicky Wagner acknowledged the hard work that the SCIRT teams had put in as well as the amazing job the book does at explaining to inquisitive young minds what goes on in the world beneath our feet. This was followed by a reading of the book and some potential engineers even got to get dress up in the construction attire, ready for their first day on the job.

All of the proceeds from the book go to the Ronald McDonald House South Island which go toward keeping the organisation’s doors open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for families that need them the most.

Missed out the first time round? Don’t worry, books can be purchased through the website or from Quake City, due to reopen 14 September 2017.
