Construction of a $40 million five-star hotel, office and retail development - the first new build mixed use project since the Christchurch rebuild started - was celebrated today with the Prime Minister Bill English unveiling the foundation stone.

The total site size of the mixed use project is 2,336m2 which includes a commercial office, an 86 room five star hotel and 700m2 of retail comprising restaurants, a day spa, and café.

The $40 million Sudima Christchurch Victoria development is the first new build mixed use project since the Christchurch rebuild started.

The Sudima Christchurch Victoria development will be built on the corner of Salisbury and Montreal Streets and signals a major investment in Christchurch’s commercial future and tourist infrastructure.

Early work on the site is underway and the development is scheduled to be completed in November 2018.

On the site will be the Sudima Christchurch Victoria 86 room hotel which will be the first new build five-star hotel in Christchurch since the rebuild. Sudima already operate four hotels in New Zealand and this hotel signals a major step in their continuing plans to expand and invest in Canterbury and the rest of the country.

Kilmour Properties Development Director Neill Barr said, “The site is unique being a mixed use investment with commercial, retail, entertainment and a residential style Hotel. The high profile location will consolidate the fast developing Victoria quarter and is a vote of confidence in the redevelopment of Christchurch.”

“The development of a new five-star hotel shows the growth of the tourism sector in the Canterbury region and demand for hotel accommodation,” said Sudima Hotels & Resorts CEO Sudesh Jhunjhnuwala.

“This is a flagship project for us in the Canterbury area. The hotel offers self-serviced apartments to cater for both long and short term guests.”

Sudima Christchurch Victoria will be based around fully serviced apartments with a South Island theme. The interior design of the common areas and apartments were inspired by the Canterbury landscape. Line, form, colour, materials and texture were used that reflected the local environment.

Ignite Architect’s Project Lead on the development Neil Wyatt said that the design approach is a unique one for a commercial property in Christchurch.

“From the start we wanted to create a high spec building to stand the test of time using the very best materials and design. We wanted to create a commercial building with a sculptural feel because of the high profile location. This can be seen in the curved glazed façade of the building.”

Particular attention was given to the acoustics of the building for both office workers and hotel guests.
