Wanaka Pool Project Update

Wanaka Pool project update

Construction of the new $12.28m Wanaka Pool, adjacent to the Wanaka Recreation Centre at Three Parks, is approximately 50 per cent complete and beginning to take shape. The foundations and stainless steel pool walls are in place and the public will see the building frames erected within the next few weeks. This will be an exciting major milestone for the project.

Whilst progress on the pool has been positive, the project team have had to overcome a few challenges resulting in the pool now due for completion in late May 2018. Cook Brothers Construction Business Development Director, Simon Glass said “while it is disappointing the project is running slightly behind on its original programme, the project team are working hard to bring it back on track and we are committed to delivering a fantastic facility for the Upper Clutha community.”

The current Wanaka Pool on Plantation Road will continue to operate until the new pool opens. This has been confirmed following a re-evaluation of the 2015 seismic strengthening.

The new Wanaka Pool will make a valuable addition to the busy Wanaka Recreation Centre which has seen a continued increase in winter bookings for the artificial turf and indoor courts, and will be hosting the upcoming Upper Clutha Festival of Sport and Recreation on the 23rd September.

Sport & Recreation Manager, Simon Battrick, said he is “looking forward to the upcoming summer when the two new sports fields are able to be used following their development and seeding earlier in the year”. The field development will help alleviate the strong demand for football in the Wanaka area for next years’ winter season.
