FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Auckland Ratepayers' Alliance has launched a petition calling on the Government to scrap plans to siphon fuel tax money from roads into other areas of spending such as trams and cycleways.
“You shouldn’t use one form of transport to cross-subsidise others,” says Jo Holmes from the Ratepayers’ Alliance.
“It’s bad enough that already 47% of the cost at the pump is tax. But hiking the cost of fuel even more, while allowing Auckland Council to shuffle the money away from roading, is nothing more than price gouging.”
“If Auckland Council found just 3.9% of savings in its budget, the 10 cents per litre tax wouldn’t be needed. The new Government is letting Phil Goff take the easy option and allowing him to dig deeper into our pockets.”
