Kaikoura District Council – One year on

Kaikoura District Council – One year on, reflections on an extraordinary year and a look at what happens now

A year ago the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and series of aftershocks saw Kaikōura completely isolated. State Highway One and the railway were blocked by damage and slips and the Inland Road suffered significant damage. Farms, homes and businesses suffered building and land damage. Power and internet went down, drinking water systems, sewage systems and local roads were all badly affected.

Our harbour was uplifted by up to two metres, making it usable only at high tide. Residents faced uncertainty and loss and a number of tourists and visitors found themselves facing an unexpected extension of their stay in our District.

We’ve put together a summary of our take on the year since the earthquakes, including;
• an update from the Mayor
• an update from the CEO
• Our EQ story
• What we’re doing to support our community
• How we’re looking after our buildings, roads, infrastructure and facilities
• How we’re working with our environment (and our hazards)
• how we’re growing our economy and businesses
• What's up next for Council
• A look at our Team

Events marking a year since the November 2016 earthquakes

In the Kaikoura District there are several community-led events planned to mark one year on from the November 14 2016 earthquakes. The events run throughout November and there's something for everyone.

This milestone is about coming together to recognise the loss and hardship caused by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, acknowledge all the progress so far and show support as our District continues on its’ recovery journey.

Kaikoura District Council is helping coordinate and promote events organised by our community to mark this important milestone. A short summary of the currently planned events including links to more information or for contacting organisers can be found on our website here.
