Hokitika’s Annual Driftwood & Sand Beach Sculpture Festival

Hokitika’s annual Driftwood & Sand beach sculpture festival will once again wow locals and visitors with its wild untamed works of art this January.

The Driftwood & Sand Festival, now in its 16th year, is a summer celebration of art and will be held from 24 to 28 January 2018. Budding artists work side by side professionals turning driftwood and other materials they find on the beach into sculptural pieces. Previous driftwood-inspired creations have been as diverse as running giants, huge eagles, stone snowmen and driftwood pianos.

One of the challenges for this upcoming Driftwood & Sand Festival is the absence of a beach at high tide. To counteract this, artists will be encouraged this year to build on the sea wall itself and the adjacent grass area. Residents can start planning and creating their sculptures any time and transport them to the site for the festival.

Festival organisers will have some demo pieces on display to help inspire creativity during the festival.

The festival is being run by a keen but small group of volunteers, some of whom are new to the team for 2018. More volunteers are always welcome and interested parties are encouraged to contact Sue Asplin for more information.
