QLDC thanks Arrowtowners for swift response as water restrictions continue

The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has praised Arrowtown residents and business owners for acting quickly to conserve water after it introduced irrigation restrictions yesterday.

Erin Moogan, QLDC Maintenance & Operations Manager, Property & Infrastructure said the local reservoir was able to replenish overnight but some restrictions would remain in place for the next few weeks.

“The response from the Arrowtown community in less than 24 hours has been excellent and helped the supply move away from critical levels that could have resulted in a boil water notice,” said Ms Moogan.

“However, continuing high demand over the school holidays and the lack of persistent rainfall means lower level restrictions will remain in place until further notice. Watering lawns and gardens uses more water than any other domestic activity. On average, a sprinkler uses 1,300 litres an hour while a hand-held hose uses 400 litres an hour.

“One of the key things to remember is that water evaporates quickly in the heat of the day so it’s much more efficient to irrigate overnight or in the early morning. A simple timer can help here.”

The following revised restrictions are effective immediately and until further notice:
• No irrigation between midday and midnight
• Sprinklers and irrigators with timers fitted may be used for 30 minutes between midnight and 6am
• Hand-held hoses may be used between 6am and midday, provided they are being held at all times.
