Warm, Wet and a Little Windy
Following on from yesterday’s scorcher and similar temperatures today, Kiwis are going to find temperatures tend a few degrees cooler, back to normal January temperatures thanks to some wet and windy weather.
Wet weather has been high on many wish-lists, given the long dry spells. Following a milder start to the week, a frontal system moves towards the country from the west bringing strengthening winds and rain to various regions over the coming days.
MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes said, “As this low-pressure system reaches us, it will spread a front across the country bringing plenty of moisture and decent amounts of rainfall for some places.”
During Wednesday, the western parts of both islands are forecast to see rain, with Nelson, Westland and Taranaki looking wettest. Over the course of Thursday, much of the North Island will see rain as the front continues drifting east. The wet weather begins to gradually ease during Friday, although Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty still look wet for much for the day. A Severe Weather Watch is already in place for heavy rain for Westland and Nelson, with the possibility of more regions being added closer to the time. There is still some uncertainty with the progression of the system as it crosses New Zealand.
McInnes commented, “If there are subtle changes in the position of the low associated with this weather, it can impact where the main effects will occur. We are also closely monitoring regions like Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula in the lead-up to this event.”
While it looks to be a wet week for many, eastern regions in the South Island remain sheltered by the Southern Alps. With only a few mid-week showers, Canterbury looks to be the place to be this week.
The frontal feature is also forecast to strengthen
northerly winds as it spreads over the country, particularly
about coastal areas. These winds could become strong in
exposed areas, so it pays to keep up to date with latest
