Significant intersection closure north Christchurch
Significant intersection closure north Christchurch - QEII Drive - Grimseys Road
The Christchurch Northern Corridor team is closing an intersection on the north side of the city in Redwood from Tuesday night, 27 February.
The Grimseys Road/QEII Drive intersection will be fully closed until mid-May.
“Closing this intersection will allow the safe construction of the QEII Drive four-laning between Grimseys Road and Main North Road,” says Colin Mackay, Delivery Manager NZ Transport Agency. “Drivers will need to use Main North Road and Daniels Road or Prestons Road to enter and exit the Grimseys Road area. The Grimseys Road Subway will remain open to allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross QEII Drive safely.
“Our work to construct two extra lanes on QEII Drive between Grimseys Road and Main North Road started this month with clearing the berm area between QEII Drive and St Bede’s College. We are also installing steel safety barriers along the road to protect our workers and keep drivers on the road safely away from our work site.
“The amount of extra traffic using Main North Road while this intersection is closed will be around 400 cars an hour at peak times which will be noticeable. The Christchurch Transport Operations Centre (CTOC) is fully aware of the detour and is comfortable it will work well when drivers are patient and give themselves a few extra minutes travel time. They will be keeping an eye on this area of Main North Road and making slight alterations to the traffic signals if necessary to maintain efficient traffic flows.”
Work on the Christchurch Northern Corridor project has been underway since November 2016 and is progressing well. The new motorway will be open in mid-2020.
