America’s Cup in Auckland a Step Closer with New Base Option

AMERICA’S CUP IN AUCKLAND A STEP CLOSER WITH NEW BASE OPTION

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has welcomed Emirates Team New Zealand’s acknowledgement that a new fourth base option is workable and would see Auckland host the America’s Cup in 2021.

Mayor Phil Goff said, “We presented the new option to Team New Zealand last week and I welcome their acknowledgement that it can work.

“The new option is cheaper, further reduces the need for extensions into the harbour and has the bases clustered on two wharves that will create a vibrant village atmosphere.

“The new option includes elements of previous base configurations and also proposals presented by local residents. It delivers greater environmental benefits and a legacy for Auckland.

“There are still elements of this option that we need to work through with all the parties and other stakeholders, but today’s acknowledgement by Team New Zealand represents progress in our negotiations.

“The new option will now need to be finalised before it is presented to Auckland Council’s Governing Body. I am hoping this will be possible in the next couple of weeks.

“The America’s Cup will be fantastic for New Zealand. We want Auckland to host the cup, and Council and government are working with Emirates Team New Zealand to ensure that we can provide the infrastructure in a timely manner and deliver an incredible event,” says Mayor Goff.

The new option incorporates elements of the Wynyard Basin option, Hybrid option, and options presented by local residents. It will also bring forward the removal of tank farms on Wynyard Point.

Officials are working with Emirates Team New Zealand on the design and details of this fourth option, as well as other aspects of the overall event.

Government and Council will continue discussions with Emirates Team New Zealand.
