Wet weekend followed by cooler southerlies

The final weekend of the School Holidays has seen rain fall across much of the country, with heavy falls recorded in many places. MetService Meteorologist Peter Little commented, “For Northland and Auckland, the rain on Saturday was relatively short-lived but intense, with 71mm falling in 3 hours at a station near Whangarei, while Piha received 57mm in 3 hours. For Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty the rain has been more prolonged, with over 120mm measured at several stations, and heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue there for the remainder of Sunday. Strong easterly winds also affected northern New Zealand on Saturday, with gusts of 100 to 120km/h measured at exposed sites.”

The South Island didn’t escape the rain, with parts of Nelson and Marlborough receiving heavy falls, along with Westland, Canterbury and Otago. “South Canterbury has received a lot of rain so far this weekend, with Timaru Airport recording 100mm in the 32 hours to 11am, while around 150mm has fallen further inland,” said Little.

Little went on to say, “Severe Weather Warnings and Watches for heavy rain remain in force for parts of the country this weekend, along with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Coromandel Peninsula and Western Bay of Plenty. People returning home from their School Holidays should be aware that driving conditions may be hazardous, with slips and surface flooding possible.” Click herefor the latest Severe Weather Information.

The weather is forecast to gradually improve during the week, as a cooler southerly flow spreads northwards on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a ridge of high pressure. “It’s a showery start to term two for most places, so keep your raincoat handy. However, high pressure is expected to dominate by Friday, ushering in mainly fine weather and light winds,” added Little.

Official Severe Weather Watches and Warnings are reviewed and re-issued by MetService at least every twelve hours, and more often if necessary.
