Disability community questions why Sensory Experience at Metro Sports Facility won’t be government funded
Following the Metro Sports Facility announcement on Friday, the disability community of Christchurch is questioning why the Aquatic Sensory Experience – a water based recreational opportunity designed for disabled people who have significant needs – must source its own external funding for fit-out.
The Earthquake Disability Leadership Group’s Projects Facilitator Amy Hartnell says she is disappointed that the Aquatic Sensory Experience is being treated differently to the rest of the aquatic components within the facility.
“The addition of the Aquatic Sensory Experience within a major recreation centre is a powerful signal of inclusion and integration,” says Ms Hartnell.
“However, by applying a different funding model to the Sensory Experience, the government does not seem to value recreational opportunities for disabled people.”
The Council’s Long-Term Plan 2018-28 outlines an additional four new aquatic facilities (Linwood, Hornby, New Brighton Hot Pools and Metro Sports) on top of the current four indoor and four outdoor aquatic centres, bringing the total to 12 facilities. However only one of those facilities has a space designed specifically for disabled people with complex needs.
Ms Hartnell says options for recreation and leisure opportunities for this customer group look different to traditional activities.
“Many participants need a more secluded environment with fewer stimuli, while others will enjoy being able to interact with and control the various pieces of equipment independently and in a way that is designed specifically for their needs.”
“A sensory space can provide freedom of movement, allow for interactivity, creativity, play and provide an opportunity for growth and pathways to other modes of aquatic recreation and social activity.”
While the Aquatic Sensory Experience is designed with the disabled community in mind, it will also give the general public the opportunity to experience this innovative way of interacting with water.
“As the Aquatic Sensory Experience is a great initiative for everyone, we would like to see it receive government funding.”
