Belfrey Tower to be reinstalled
The Belfrey Tower from the Gisborne Fire Station will return to its historic location beside the Taruheru River at Peel Street bridge.
The Community Development and Services Committee yesterday approved the new location of the tower, requested in a 2015-2025 Long Term Plan submission.
The Belfry Tower was one of three installed around Gisborne after a large structure fire destroyed 20 buildings in 1877.
After the fire, town residents took it upon themselves to organise firefighting equipment, purchased by the local borough council. The three bells were part of this equipment and installed around the town to ring in the event of a fire.
The Belfry tower was first installed at Gladstone Road before being relocated to the Peel Street Bridge and Palmerston Road intersection in 1912.
As firefighting communication methods improved, the bells became historic items and the Belfry Tower was stored at the Gisborne Fire Station.
Local resident Keith Watts asked that the tower be reinstalled on the riverbank in his submission on the 2015-2025 LTP.
The committee also approved a report outlining an estimated cost of up to $8000 for reinstallation.
